How do i prepare a red cedar house for painting?
Published 1 year, 11 months ago in My life. Can anyone help with some advice on this as i have heared so many opinions but don’t know anyone that has done it.
I have heared i need to sand the whole house first.
Someone else told me a high pressure hose and stiff brush will do, but with water restrictions thats out.
and someone else said that with a good paint you don’t need to prepare it!
So as you can imagine i am now confused…
if anyone has successfully done it i would really like to hear from you…
thanks..

I live in a Western Red Cedar house and have seen many that have been painted.
The comments that you received about preparing the wood are pretty much correct (not sure about he high pressure though a that wouldn’t smooth the wood out), but dependant upon the look, my Western Red Cedar is pretty rough and if I were to paint it, I probably would have to sand it down - big job.
Bunnings will give you the best advice, but many Western Red Cedars that I have seen have just put a good undercoat on and then the top coat.
Over the summer so far, we have re-stained our house and it looks supurb, but a hard job as the wood was so rough, the stain really had to be ‘worked’ in.
thanks Bashful,
Ill chat to the guys at bunnings
Hi,
Bunnings is definitely great - don’t have a cedar house but have an old home with cathedral ceilings in the old mission brown rough hewn beams. Spoke to local Bunnings store and their advice was to sand, brush down and coat with a product called stain killer primer sealer. Basically I wanted to get rid of the mission brown and paint it a light off white colour. It’s worked - took a lot of elbow grease in preparation with the sanding, cleaning, sealer and two top coats - but the end result is fantastic.
Get advice from the professionals is the best thing you can do.
